Slacker Success Audio Book

That’s why the title of this book is “Slacker Success”. You see, there is nothing wrong with being a slacker. Sure, the word has developed a kind of pejorative meaning. It’s a quasi-insult. It’s a criticism. It’s a judgment.

It’s all three in one. It a term coined by the hyper-productive to snootily and not too subtly imply that someone isn’t pulling their weight and lifting their fair share. It’s this last bit that they got right. Slacker-hood isn’t about being lazy, but it is about taking advantage of the system and turning it to your advantage. It is about discovering ways to make the doing of things easier so there is more time to chill out, post up, cool down, decompress, kick back, vegetate and generally do more while doing a whole lot less.

The truth is a work ethic that has too fine an edge can be too much of a good thing. It’s like a very sharp knife. It’s an efficient tool, but one that carries the potential to harm you as well. It’s getting the job done, but one of these days you’re going to slip and that well-honed work ethic will cut you deeply.

At the end of the day, or at any point throughout the day, are you able to completely and thoroughly let go of work and relax? Can you relax without guilt? Can you watch Netflix without a nagging little voice telling you that your time would be better spent getting more work done? If you’re unable to completely relax, then you’re not being productive, you’re driving yourself too hard. You’re driving the things that give you joy out of your life. By focusing too hard on the tasks at hand, you’re allowing that knife to slip and you’re cutting yourself.

It’s time for all of us to take back the word “slacker” and turn it into a badge of honor.
